I have been feeling a bit guilty that my kids generally get nowhere near the recommended five daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Most days they get at least one, if you count apple juice as a serving. If you count the strawberry jelly that goes on their PBJ's, then they get two. We are a "meat and potato" kinda family. (Hey! I just realized a potato is a vegetable! That makes three!)
So I decided to shop differently this week. Let's compare my old shopping habits with my new more health conscious grocery list:
Off brand bag of cookies: $1.00
Fresh Strawberries: $3.50
Box of Fruit Snacks (with negligible real "fruit"): $1.50
Bag of Sugar Snap Peas: $2.99
Box of Little Debbies: $1.25
Box of Granola Bars: $3.50
Can of Pringles: $1.00
Can of Mixed Nuts: $3.99
And on and on it goes. [Sigh.] All I can say is that the kids better scarf up those Snap Peas like they are the greatest thing they ever tasted.
A couple years ago when Jonathan and I watched Super Size Me we swore off McDonalds and Happy Meals for at least six months...maybe it's time for another viewing.
my 15 year old daughter watched Super Sized at school the other day...It scared her!!!...She rented it for Chill Queen to watch...It is sitting on our kitchen table right now...Put the family in the mini van and come to Georgia...We will watch it together!!!
Thanks for sharing the stuff you have these past couple of weeks...You guys are a blessing to my family!!!
Actually, potatoes are NOT a vegetable, friend. They're a starch. :-)
Okay, I suspect this posting was mostly in good fun, but can I give you a few suggestions??
Buy the all-fruit jam, no sugar added. It tastes amazing and it is a valid fruit. :-) It's a little more expensive, yes.
Sneak spinach into anything you can. I put it on almost every pizza UNDER the cheese. Ah ha ha! Also, try making quiche lorraine every once in a while. Or add it to a layer of lasagna. My family loves it. You can even stir spinach into barbecued chopped beef or chicken. I'm telling you--they never even notice around here! Spinach is the camoflauge vegetable!!
Chop veggies up REALLY tiny (food processor, oh yeah!) and put them in things. Don't tell anyone.
You're gonna think this is just MEAN, but my kids think dessert is vanilla yogurt over fruit. Seriously, you wanna know what all three kids had for dessert tonight? This is funny actually! They had those canned, jellied cranberries. :-) I've got them totally fooled. Of course, I'm thousands of miles away from the U.S., and they don't know what they're missing really!!!
Sorry, had to share...
Sorry, I KNOW I'm taking this all too literally, but also:
Fruit smoothies!! Fruit, ice, yogurt. Yum!!
